WHIC & NC Women’s Hospital Tour

Take a virtual walk through the N.C. Women's Hospital at Chapel Hill by clicking on the following 5 numbered  links (click on doors within each panorama to pass to other areas):

1. See panoramic view of entrance and Lobby; and visit the Women's Health Information Center

The Women's Health Information Center (WHIC) offers a variety of childbirth education classes and free maternity tours of NC Women's Labor and Delivery and Maternity Care Center.  Since UNC Health Care is a Baby Friendly Designated Hospital, the Center also holds free educational 'Ready, Set, Baby’ sessions with parents-to-be as part of their prenatal care at UNC Hospitals.  You may call the Obstetrical Clinic at 919-966-2131 or the WHIC main number 919-843-8463 to schedule this session.

Situated adjacent to the ground-floor lobby of NC Women's Hospital, the Women's Health Information Center is home to a free lending-library containing books on women's health, as well as public access to the internet. WHIC also provides a free monthly Art Exhibit to all visitors.  The art you see in our virtual tour panorama is by artist Shirley Galbrecht.  To see more of her work or get more information about her, you can visit her Facebook page or email her at sag@embarqmail.com.

2. Picture of Escalators to OB Clinics and Stork sign to Elevators

Once you enter the Lobby of Women's Hospital, the escalator located on your left will take you to the NC Women’s Hospital OB-GYN Clinics (1st floor), where we provide prenatal care. The Stork sign hanging from the ceiling about the Women's Hospital Information Desk indicates the only elevators that will take patients and visitors to the OB-GYN Clinics (1st floor), to Labor & Delivery (4th floor) and the Maternity Care Center (5th floor).  Before you take elevators to Labor & Delivery and the Maternity Care Center units you will need to be authorized by the Information Desk staff, so please be prepared to provide a photo ID.

3. Picture of Phone to enter Labor & Delivery and Maternity Care units

To enter the area of Labor & Delivery and the Maternity Care Center, patients and visitors need to lift the phone handset on the wall; please DO NOT PUSH the double doors in or out as it will trigger our alarm security system.  Our nursing staff will authorize your entrance and doors will open automatically.  For your safety, there are cameras in all hallways. All visitors will need to have a Visitor Pass that you can get at the Information Desk in the Lobby.  A photo ID will be necessary to get that Pass.

4. See panoramic view of the Labor & Delivery unit (L&D) on the Fourth Floor

Coming from the elevators to the hallway, you will see the L&D unit’s doors on your right. Once you lift the phone and are authorized to enter, the nursing station inside the L&D unit will welcome you.  You will view a Triage room where moms will be assessed at arrival and you will virtually visit one of our private L&D rooms. If you would like to visit these rooms in person you may sign up for a Maternity Tour.  To enter the L&D unit all visitors need to request a Visitor Pass at the Information Desk in the Lobby (entrance floor).

5. See panoramic view of the Maternity Care Center on the Fifth Floor

Shortly after the arrival of the baby, both mom and baby (and family) will be moved to a private room at the Maternity Care Center (5th floor), where post-partum recovery will take place.  This panoramic view showcases one of these rooms. As part of the ‘Baby Friendly’ Initiative, mom and baby will stay in the same room at all times under the care of the same "Mother-Baby" nurse. The baby’s medical care and first bath will also happen in this room.  Parents will have time to ask questions and feel confident and prepared when they go home!  As with the L&D unit, all visitors will need to bring a photo ID to request a Visitor Pass at the Information Desk in the Lobby.

UNC Women’s Health is the only center in the triangle to have both Five-Star North Carolina Maternity Care Center Breastfeeding Friendly and Baby Friendly© designations.
